The H.E.A.L.T.H. Curriculum is a workshop that was created because previous outreach efforts to adolescents clearly showed a deficit in youth's awareness of key health concepts and also revealed youth's inability to obtain services in the San Francisco health delivery system. Our experiences confirmed that youth lack understanding about the importance of being in control of one's health and exercising principles of self-advocacy and prevention. The curriculum was designed to increase youth's knowledge of health and empower them to become active and savvy consumers of health care by focusing on these components: H-having knowledge, E-enrollment and A-access, L-living healthy, T-total, H-health. Through the use of this acronym, the workshop provides the following:
  • Information on health topics
  • Examples of how to ask questions to a health care provider
  • Prevention tips
  • Steps teens can take to impact the quality of health care they receive
  • Various types of health insurance coverage
  • And much, much more...
