Research and Advocacy

Transitional aged young adults (19-24) are a vulnerable group that is often overlooked. They are forced to undertake the responsibilities of adulthood without having financial stability, and they suffer from the health risks of childhood without having the established support system that is afforded to children. We aim to advocate for policy initiatives which extend comprehensive health care coverage during the transitional period between childhood and adulthood.

Recent Developments to the HIYA project

In the summer of 2005, AHWG partnered with Michelle Byrnes from Honoring Emancipated Youth (HEY), worked with Jim Soos at the Department of Public Health, Sarah He, aide to San Francisco Board Supervisor Maxwell, and Jean Fraser, CEO of San Francisco Health Plan to exempt 19-25 year old former foster youth from the eligibility restrictions of Healthy Kids & Young Adults. In addition to young parents, former foster youth are now exempt from the eligibility restrictions.

Enrollment

Through a collaboration with the San Francisco Health Plan, the AHWG has begun a campaign to educate and enroll eligible youth into one of three public health insurance programs. "Get Covered" aims to reach out to youth in schools, afterschool programs, or other community based organizations and educate them about the expansion of the Healthy Kids and Young Adults Program.

We are also excited to announce that three members of AHWG's staff are now certified application assistors (CAA) which means we can enroll youth into Medi-Cal, Healthy Families, or Healthy Kids and Young Adults.
